Even in Israel is discussed on the Armenian genocide
A parliamentary committee has examined the possibility of a national day of remembrance, after the crisis between France and Turkey a few days ago
An Israeli parliamentary committee discussed today, for the first time in a public session, the opportunity to officially recognize the mass killing of hundreds of thousands of Armenians in the territories of the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1916 as a genocide. The debate took place within the Committee of the Knesset (Israel's unicameral parliament of the state) for education and culture, and concerned the possibility of dedicating a day of national commemoration of the event. The committee has not reached a decision and has postponed the discussion until a later date.
Any recognition of the Armenian genocide by the Israeli authorities would be another blow to the already deteriorated relations between Israel and Turkey, as pointed out by an official of the Israeli Foreign Ministry who attended the discussion. On 22 December, the French National Assembly approved a law (which must now pass the Senate, where similar initiatives have already been shot down several times) that criminalizes those who deny or diminish the Armenian genocide, sparking a furore and military retaliation , diplomatic and trade by Turkey.
Several Israeli MPs have supported the initiative, specifically linking the Armenian genocide than the Jewish population during the Second World War. A parliamentary left-wing party Meretz, reports Haaretz , said that "Israel has a moral obligation and historical" to "recognize the genocide of the Armenian people", and to ensure that the event is taught in schools. Until now, the subject had been treated only in non-public sessions of the Committee of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence, where the proposal had been rejected several times. Israel is not now among the twenty countries (including Italy) officially recognizing the killing of Armenians as genocide of 1915-1916..... more

How Facebook Will Profit Even More From Your Profile
Facebook is only free in name. While the company most definitely does not sell your information, Facebook “makes its money from showing you ads,” as a webpage from Facebook explains. So what, you might say: Ads are everywhere, flashing and pop-upping from websites across the internet, on the sidelines of your Gmail account, on the floor of your supermarket.
What’s different is that the ads you are shown on Facebook are tailored to you based on your personal information and on whatever pages, events, etc. you have “liked” on Facebook. Rather than you having to scan the pages of the weekly circulars — those advertising inserts tucked into paper newspapers that many of us never look at anymore — the ads about things you’re likely to be interested in are seamlessly delivered to you.
An “exclusive” guest post on BetaBeat says that new features on Facebook mean that the company, whose spring 2012 IPO is getting closer and closer, will generate even more profits from your profile. The author of the post is an anonymous contributor described as a “former CTO who now does tech consulting for other start-up ventures and was briefed on Facebook’s advertising strategy”; he says that Facebook’s much ballyhooed new Timeline profile was designed not so much with a view to enhance your social media experience, as to enhance advertisers’ brand messaging.
Starting in January, Facebook will also integrate another type of ad, “sponsored stories” — posts and activities that businesses have paid Facebook to feature – into your Timeline. They will look like updates from friends as a friend’s profile photo will be displayed besides content they have “liked.” Facebook has described Timeline as a great innovation that makes it possible to present your entire history back to the day you were born; all Facebook profiles will be converted to the new format by the end of this year.
But, according to the BetaBeat post, what Timeline is really doing is disguising ads as updates from your friends. From BetaBeat:..... more

Warning! The Future Of Our Planet Is At Risk
People in towns and cities are losing touch with the “realities of the natural world”, which is putting the future of the planet at risk, Sir David Attenborough has warned.
The veteran wildlife presenter says rapid urbanization over the past 60 years has endangered the future of planet earth, since a growing number of people do not regularly come into contact with the natural world.
Over Half The World’s Population Now Lives In Cities
Attenborough is reminding us that since at least 2005 over half of the world’s population lives in cities.
In an interview with Eureka magazine, published by the Times, he said: “We have a huge moral responsibility towards the rest of the planet. A hundred years ago people certainly had that … They were aware of the seasons and aware of what they were doing to the land and animals around them.”.... more

Protester Dragged By Headscarf in Tahrir: 3 Days of Violence
For the third day in a row, protesters and military police have clashed in Cairo’s Tahrir Square in deadly violence. At least 10 have been killed and over 441 injured. Hundreds of protesters, demanding that the ruling military council hand over power to civilians, have been camping out in the cold in Tahrir. The violence began on Friday after one of several hundred protesters at a sit-in outside Parliament officers was detained and beaten. More clashes have occurred on Saturday and Sunday, when results from a second round of voting, again showing gains for Islamist parties, were announced.
Shocking Brutalities Against Unarmed Protesters
The Guardian and Al Jazeera both describe shocking details of military police kicking protesters repeatedly in the head until they stopped moving and of protesters being dragged into parliamentary buildings where they were beaten, slapped and tortured with electronic prods. Military police used truncheons and long sticks, destroyed a field hospital, set fire to tents and briefly detained journalists. Lowe’s Withdraws Ads From All-American Muslim Show
The Florida Family Association, a Christian group, is claiming that its protests have led to a number of companies pulling their ads from All-American Muslim, a TLC reality-TV show about five Lebanese families in Dearborn, Michigan, that premiered on November 13 and that has been so far well-received. While the national hardware chain Lowe’s has indeed pulled its ads from future episodes of the show after consumer complaints, it is not clear if other companies have pulled their ads for similar reasons. In at least one case, FFA’s claim that a company had pulled its ads has been contradicted by the company itself.
According to FFA, 65 out of 67 companies it targeted have pulled their ads; the companies listed are Bank of America, the Campbell Soup Co., Dell, Estee Lauder, General Motors, Goodyear, Green Mountain Coffee, McDonalds, Sears, and Wal-Mart. However, Home Depot and Sweet ‘N Low both noted (via emails posted on the FFA site) that they had simply only bought one commercial spot, rather than cancelling ads. Amway has indeed “denied” that it had pulled ads from the show and stated that any reports to the contrary are “misleading” and had “falsely named” Amway.... more

Crowd of Over 50 Teens Overrun Police in Attempt to Assault Victim at Home
It seems that these days bullying stories have sadly become pretty common in the news.
This does not mean we should stop writing about them or that they are less important. On the contrary, the only way we are going to be able to successfully address the issue of bullying is by continuing to highlight the reality that kids face these days.
Take for example a girl in Staten Island who was bullied by not 1 or 2 other students, but a crowd of 50-55 teens who showed up at her door step with guns, blades, and knives to start a fight...... more

Over 4,000 Dead in Syria, Says UN .....
Over 4,000 people have been killed in the almost nine months of popular protests against the authoritarian regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Norway Killer Found Insane, Unfit for Prison
OSLO, Norway (AP) — Confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik belongs in psychiatric care instead of prison, prosecutors in Norway said Tuesday after a mental evaluation declared him legally insane during a bomb-and-shooting rampage that killed 77 people.
The court-ordered assessment found that the self-styled anti-Muslim militant was psychotic during the July 22 attacks, which would make him mentally unfit to be convicted and imprisoned for the country’s worst peacetime massacre.
The report, written by two psychiatrists who spent a total of 36 hours talking to Breivik, will be reviewed by a forensic panel before the Oslo district court makes a ruling on his mental state.
Their conclusions surprised many outside experts and contrasted with earlier comments by the head of the review panel, who told The Associated Press in late July that it was unlikely that Breivik would be declared insane because the attacks were so carefully planned and executed.
But prosecutors insisted the psychiatric report describes a man living in a “delusional universe” — a paranoid schizophrenic who’s lost touch with reality..... more on

Migrants in Egypt Targeted For Body Parts
People fleeing persecution in countries like Eritrea are being killed in Egypt for their body parts.
According to a doctor in a town on the Sudan-Egypt border quoted by South Africa’s Weekend Argus newspaper, a number of “disemboweled bodies” have been discovered. Organs, especially kidneys, were missing.
A recent car crash in Sinai provided evidence. The doctor who was driving the car was killed and, inside the vehicle, officials discovered a small refrigerator containing several human organs. There is other evidence including photographs from a morgue in the Egyptian port town of al-Arish showing scars in the abdomens of refugees who did not make it.
At least 27 refugees have alleged that Egyptian Bedouin people-smugglers have threatened to steal their organs unless they or their families paid money, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) Israel says.
The Egyptian authorities are known for ignoring the treatment of migrants by traffickers and others, or, in the case of those trying for the Israeli border, actually shooting to kill. They deny the evidence of any trade in body parts...... more

On May 31, 2010, an Israeli military raid on an aid flotilla sailing to the blockaded Gaza Strip resulted in the deaths of 19 unarmed peace activists, prompting international condemnation over what was perceived as a brutal and unjustified use of force.
Five of those killed were Italian nationals who were part of the humanitarian mission attempting to break the blockade by delivering goods and construction materials to the occupied Palestinian territory. Israeli sanctions on Gaza since 2001 have led to widespread poverty and rampant unemployment there.
But the deadly attack on the flotilla has only served to further motivate Italian supporters of the Palestinian cause. The Palestine Forum, a network of Italian committees and associations, is pushing for greater political support for the Palestinians, while the Rome Palestinian Solidarity Network is continuing to organise a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israeli products.....

Special Rapporteur says the manner of the deposed Libyan leader's killing could be a war crime.
The UN has called for an international investigation into the death of Muammar Gaddafi, the deposed Libyan leader, saying it could have been a war crime.
Christof Heyns, the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, told Al Jazeera on Friday that a proper investigation into the exact events surrounding Gaddafi’s death was a key test for Libya’s future as a democratic and accountable state.
“The Geneva conventions are very clear that when prisoners are taken they may not be executed willfully and if that was the case then we are dealing with a war crime, something that should be tried.”
“It’s important that the new government will be placed on a solid basis where there is accountability for illegal actions. I think it would be good if there was international investigation into this as well, and it’s not simply Mr Gaddafi but also there’s the dangers of reprisals against others as well and that is where it is important to draw the line to say that new system in place one of accountability.”
Libya's National Transitional Council delayed Gaddafi's burial on Firday in order to arrange a secret location and allow for an investigation into his death, officials said.
Mohamed Sayeh, a senior member of the NTC, told the Associated Press news agency that a "third party will come from outside of Libya to go through the paperwork" relating to Gaddafi's death....

Ret. Police Captain Calls NYPD ‘Corporate Thugs’ [video]
Over 30,000 people flooded the streets of New York City during Occupy Wall Street’s November 17th day of action. Over 100 were arrested for participating in the march and rally, but none have enjoyed as much media attention as Retired Police Captain Ray Lewis.
A veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, Lewis was arrested in full uniform while carrying a sign that read “NYPD Don’t Be Wall Street Mercenaries.”
Lewis joined the demonstration to protest the way that NYPD and police departments around the country have treated Occupy Wall Street Protesters.

A Mother’s Open Letter to Jerry Sandusky
Jerry Sandusky, you are almost without doubt, guilty of sexually abusing children and there is no doubt your reputation is ruined.
However, there is one path you can take that could bring some good into this otherwise devastatingly tragic situation: You should come clean. You should admit your problem. You should apologize to each and every victim. Then, you should use your public notoriety to shine a neon spotlight on this dark, dank secret that many, many men and some women, carry with them like a shadow with claws that not only never, ever goes away, but also pulls in more victims every hour of every day. My daughter, at age 6, was one of those victims.
Why should you, Mr. Sandusky, take this path? Pedophilia is a psychiatric disorder listed in the DSM IV manual – and it currently has no cure. So once a pedophile, always a pedophile. The millions of people suffering from this disorder need help – lifetime help – just as a schizophrenic or an alcoholic needs lifetime help and support.
If we decide as a society to ignore the fact that pedophilia is a medical condition and choose only to criminalize it instead, most individuals who understand they have pedophilic tendencies will not seek help – and the most glaring problem about pedophilia is that, by definition, the trauma is passed on from one generation to the next in a sordid mix of blood, tears, guilt, shame, blame, anger and sorrow..... more

Toxic Butt Injections Hospitalized Woman
A transgender woman claiming to be a doctor injected cement, fix-a-flat, mineral oil, and Super Glue into the buttocks of a woman in the Miami area, resulting in several hospital visits for the victim. The person depicted in the image above is the alleged injector of the toxic materials, not the victim whose identity has not been released. Police in Miami eventually found the transgender woman who claimed to be a doctor, yet has no license and injected the victim in a Miami Gardens townhouse several times for $700. As of yesterday it wasn’t verified, but it appears the accused had been injecting herself as well.
“In a world where body image is in the forefront of our media, this woman, for whatever reason, thought that this was the answer and she almost lost her life,” said one of the detectives on the case. (Source: Sun Sentinel) It actually took over a year to track down the fake doctor. The victim was too embarrassed to report the situation, due to the sensitive nature of the attempted body augmentation. Human Rights:
SEATTLE (AP) — A downtown march and rally in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement turned briefly chaotic as police scattered a crowd of rowdy protesters — including a pregnant 19-year-old and an 84-year-old activist — with blasts of pepper spray.
Protest organizers denounced the use of force, saying that police indiscriminately sprayed the chemical irritant at peaceful protesters.
The Occupy Seattle movement released a written statement late Tuesday expressing support for “a 4-foot 10-inch, 84-year-old woman, a priest and a pregnant woman who as of this writing is still in the hospital.”
Dorli Rainey is an activist who has supported liberal causes in the Seattle area for decades. A photo showing Rainey being cared for by fellow activists in the immediate aftermath of the police incident appeared on news websites around the world.
Seattle police spokesman Jeff Kappel said he didn’t have specifics on the Rainey incident, but he said pepper spray is “is not age specific. No more dangerous to someone who is 10 or someone who is 80.”....

BREAKING: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Arrested in Libyan Desert
Saif al-Islam, the second son of Moammar el-Gaddafi and once thought to be a liberal reformer, has been found and arrested in the southern Libyan desert, say Mohammed al-Alagy, Libya’s acting justice minister, and other officials. Fighters from the western mountain city of Zintan said they had captured Saif and three armed companions on Saturday. Crowds celebrated and celebratory gunfire rang out in the capital of Tripoli and in Zintan, where an angry mob reportedly tried to storm the plane that Saif was on.
Libyan TV has aired a photo posted on Facebook purportedly of Saif in custody. He was found wearing traditional robes and a thick beard; he has so far refused to identify himself. Asked about the bandages on his right thumb and two other fingers, he said it was from the “air force”; asked if he meant a NATO strike, he responded “yes.”
The fighters who detained Saif said they plan to keep him in Zintan until the Libyan interim government, the National Transition Council (NTC), has formed an administration, as interim prime minister Abdurrahim El-Keib has said they will on Tuesday. Libyans wish to try Saif at home to address killings, repression and the wholesale theft of public funds that occurred during his father Gaddafi’s 40 years of rule. But Saif is also wanted for crimes against humanity, for ordering that protesters be fired on in February, by the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague. Acting justice minister Alagy said that the Libyan government would not oppose having international monitors present at any trial proceedings.... more on

Mental Harm Caused by Prolonged Immigration Detention
An Australian current affairs show has lifted the lid on the mental damage done to asylum seekers locked up, usually in remote areas, for prolonged periods.
The show exposed how medication prescribed to asylum seekers is being misused, teenagers placed at risk of sexual assault and how many cases of self-harm are going unreported, giving the public a false impression of conditions behind the wire.
It asked: are people being damaged for life by such prolonged detention?
Australia has a mandatory detention policy and most are held for a year, but a significant proportion can be held for much longer.
Last year, the Australian Government announced that it would begin releasing children into the community to minimize the harm that they recognized was caused by their incarceration. About 800 have thus far been released..... more on

Hospital May Refuse McDonald’s “WeightWash” Donation
It appears to be a first in Australia. In a move that may earn them worried admiration in the Australian health and corporate communities, a small-city hospital near Sydney, New South Wales, is considering turning down a $66,000 donation from two of the community’s good citizens. Shellharbour Hospital would make good use of the money being offered to fund new equipment for its emergency department. The hospital has gratefully received similar contributions from Glenn and Katia Dwarte before.
The problem is the hospital is having second thoughts about the source of the money. The Dwartes run the nearby Warilla McDonald’s, and Shellharbour Hospital officials are concerned that accepting the money sends the wrong message about fast food. Turning down the money from these two respected and caring people will send a message that may encourage other health agencies and cause concern in some corporate sectors... more

Dramatic Testimony Against Texas Confederate License Plate – VIDEO
Last week, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles board of directors decided unanimously not to approve a Texas Sons of Confederate Veterans license plate featuring a Confederate battle flag. Many people showed up at the DMV hearing Thursday to testify for and (mostly) against the measure. But one man stood out: Reverend George V. Clark of east Austin’s Mount Zion Baptist Church, an African-American who has lived in Texas his entire 82 years. He’s seen a lot of history.
Many dignitaries testified for far longer than Reverend Clark, but it was his testimony that won the day.

Israel Proposing Indefinite Detention of Refugees (Video)
Israel has for the past few years been experiencing an influx of refugees, most from Africa and many from the benighted country of Eritrea.
These refugees cross the Sinai desert and face appalling conditions with slavery reported in camps, hostage taking and potshots taken at them by Egypt’s military. Many have died. A small group of very brave human rights defenders in North Sinai have been working to save hundreds of lives there.
Since the beginning of November, about 950 migrants are known to have illegally made their way into Israel, which is a lot for a country unused to non-Jewish refugees.
In June, a Population, Immigration and Borders Authority (PIBA) representative told The Jerusalem Post there were now more than 35,000 African migrants in Israel, 80 percent of them Sudanese or Eritrean.
The arrival of refugees in a country built by refugees have resulted in some soul searching.
For nearly 2,000 years, the Jewish people were guests, refugees or asylum-seekers in other peoples’ countries. Sometimes they benefited from their hosts’ good treatment, sometimes they were expelled, discriminated against and persecuted.
Now with a sovereign country of its own the Jewish people must not only serve as a moral example of how developed countries should deal with refugees and asylum-seekers, but also make sure that a strong Jewish majority is maintained in a sovereign Jewish state.... more on

The Chinese search invests in Italy
The ribbon cutting, scheduled today in Milan, seals the exceptionality of the case: for the first time ever a Chinese multinational company such as Huawei's move as a research strategy is to microwave technology from Shenzhen, the headquarters, to 'abroad, in Milan. In 2005, the year of arrival in Italy, the telecommunications company employees were few, now have 500. A hundred researchers from the new research center coordinated by Renato Lombardi, the director, who is not surprised that much for the choice of the company. On the contrary. Lombardi says: "Here in Milan, is the right climate for capacity and quality of human resources, the choice of Huawei will bring new jobs and an optimization of the company's presence in Italy, in the heart of Europe, a position strategically. "
Huawei's focus for the Italian scientific collaboration is not an isolated case. Certainly the most striking, but the Chinese are looking for better and, in certain sectors, Italy is the right place. Haier, for example, the giant world of appliances, number one in white, has kept Italy in the European center of design, between Varese and the establishment of Campodoro (Padua), the two poles between which it was designed 3D the fridge. A gem of a design that says Shubao Sun, head of the Europe division "Haier will start producing in Pakistan and China, because it has a line much like the Chinese domestic market, reminiscent of Western products of high design. DuPont Launches Global Collaboratory, collaboration in research to meet the challenge of sustainability
"We hit seven billion share , but we will also be nine billion people on Earth. And how are we going to feed us all without completely exhausting the resources of the planet? It is an enormous challenge which no one can escape. " Robbiati Louis, Head of Marketing and Sales for Europe, the Middle East and Africa by Du Pont , a leading worldwide by $ 34 billion in revenue in 2010, is in Italy for only two days to take stock of the situation in our country, which is the second largest market in Europe for new business. It has very clear ideas on how environmental sustainability is now an absolute necessity for any human activity and both a great business opportunity to continue to grow businesses and economies with them.
The Du Pont has set out on this road a long time now, before the Green Economy to become a campaign slogan, also. He started working at home, to eat less and better in their activities. To the point that the company's business cards are printed on light cardboard instead of classic. But actions are fielding new and more targeted to the whole world to transform the statements of principle into concrete actions. The numbers, however, give reason. Between 2010 and 2011 the increase in turnover exceeds 20% and the result is close to 40 billion dollars. The goal of 2 billion dollars of products with reduced environmental impact is at hand. The company continues to detach dividends to shareholders each year (without any break, a record) and is revising upwards its estimates for the next quarter..... more

Tell Congress to Stop Scapegoating Clean Air Standards
•Sponsored by: Environmental Defense Fund
It's an outrage. Instead of dealing with America's real economic challenges, polluter allies in Congress would rather blame our clean air standards for the sluggish economy, as if dirtier air will magically create jobs.
In a political strategy memo, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) has mapped out a week-by-week legislative assault to block as many as eight life-saving environmental standards that protect our kids and hold polluters accountable.
Please take action today. Tell your members of Congress cleaner air is not to blame for our weak economy. Urge them to reject this outrageous and absurd assault on our clean air.

Penn State Sex Scandal: Tougher Laws About Child Abuse Necessary
by Kristina ChewAs Penn State University struggles to do major damage control in the wake of charges of sexual abuse of eight boys by a former defensive football coach, Jerry Sandusky, and of the resulting firing of legendary coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier, state lawmakers are seeking to introduce legislation to tighten Pennsylvania’s laws about reporting child abuse. State Rep. Kevin Boyle, Democrat-Philadelphia, has announced a plan to that would require school officials to report allegations of sexual abuse of children to the police. In a statement, Boyle noted that his legislation would close a current “loophole” as it would require “those who are aware of the abuse to report it to law enforcement authorities, rather than simply following an in-house chain of command.” In 2002, graduate assistant Mike McQueary said that he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in the showers of the Penn State football facilities. McQueary reported what he had seen to Paterno, who then notified athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz. The two administrators in turn notified university president Graham Spanier, but none reported what had happened to the police.Curley and Schultz have been charged with lying to the grand jury about what they knew from what McQueary reported to them. by Kristina ChewAs Penn State University struggles to do major damage control in the wake of charges of sexual abuse of eight boys by a former defensive football coach, Jerry Sandusky, and of the resulting firing of legendary coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier, state lawmakers are seeking to introduce legislation to tighten Pennsylvania’s laws about reporting child abuse. Special Ed Aide’s Bullying of Student Caught on Tape
Yesterday I wrote about a Monroe County, Louisiana, teacher duct-taping a six-year-old boy with special needs to his chair — unfortunately, here’s another report about teachers treating students with special needs inappropriately and even bullying them. Last spring, an Ohio mother had her teenage daughter with special needs wear a wire to record abusive comments made to her by classroom staff in a resource room. Over a period of four days, aide Kelly Chaffins told the student that she was “dumb” and a “liar” and said “No wonder you don’t have any friends.” Chaffins also mocked the student’s physical appearance:
“Don’t you want to get rid of that belly?…Go for a walk. Do you know how to? You are just lazy and your family is lazy.”
Clasroom teacher Christie Wilt, who had taught for seven years at Miami Trace Middle School in Washington Courthouse, Ohio, was also recorded “order[ing]” the student to walk on the treadmill. After 15 minutes, the treadmill broke; the student was then told to run in place, says Brian Garvine, a lawyer for the student’s family.
Last month, the Miami Trace Local School District was ordered to pay $300,000 to the mother of the student for the bullying by school staff. Chaffins resigned after the tapes came to light and Wilt, who is currently on maternity leave, has agreed to receive eight hours of training about bullying and recognizing child abuse. Miami Trace superintendent says that, as soon as evidence emerged about the abusive comments, the school district took action. The Collapse of Honey Bees
Half of all the honey bees on the planet have died in recent years. A startling fact when you consider not only the impact that this has on the food chain and our food supply, but the even deeper metaphor that this represents for our culture. The disappearance of the bees has been named “Colony Collapse Disorder” and one well known bio-dynamic bee keeper featured in the new film by Taggart Siegel, Queen of the Sun, commented that actually the bees are showing us that this disorder is our own.
After watching the film at the recent Bioneers annual conference which offers the most progressive analysis and solution orientation to the global environmental crises we face, I decided to become a bee keeper. Honey bees are one of the few super-organisms on the planet, which is to say that a hive of tens of thousands of bees sacrifice their individual identities to create a bigger whole. The biology of creating beeswax and honey is nothing short of miraculous… Pollination is the tireless and miraculous process in which the natural world reproduces and evolves. The honey bees tireless efforts are literally the erotic glue that produces over 40% of our food supply. There is not a more sacred act of love that exists on this planet, nor one that we more take for granted.... more on

Autistic Girl Raped After Deboarding School Bus
Just as a 14-year-old autistic girl deboarded her school bus at 8:00 am at a Rutherford County high school on October 28, 36-year-old William Gilbert Barnett Jr. of Clarksville, Tennessee, picked her up and allegedly raped her in his truck. Barnett returned her to the school bus stop around 4:00 pm after school. He has been charged with three rape charges and three counts of aggravated sexual battery. It’s a chilling case, for schools and for parents of autistic children who often struggle to interpret social cues and to grasp the intentions of an individual like that of the accused in this case....

The man who invented the laser
How far is the Moon from Earth? How much does a liter of milk? Or, what is written on the CD case that you are not in your hands? There is only one way to answer all the questions to have a laser . It is shooting a laser beam towards a reflector placed by the astronauts on the moon that we know the distance that separates us from our satellite (384mila km). Thus, it is past the reader of the case the bar code printed on the carton of milk, or any other product in the supermarket, we know how much to pay. And also to listen to a CD, we need an optical drive. All applications of the same brilliant idea, that of ' light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation . In a word of the laser , invented by Gordon Gould (1920-2005) on the night of November 9, 1957 .
Have you ever seen the light photographed? Here are the pictures.
Gould, a physicist with a doctorate in New York spectroscopy at Columbia University , it had risen shortly after midnight, a prey to the urge to write what had been flashed in my head. He put it down on paper his notes ( "Some rough calculations on the feasibility of a laser: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation" ), on the feasibility of the laser . It was the first time that acronym was used. He was to indicate the way the light was amplified to produce a beam narrow and high-power, and Gordon was well aware of the extent of his insight. So much so that when he had finished writing his notes brought because they were authenticated by a notary. Almost imagined how much profit would be returned over time....

On Monday, a group of Greenpeace Africa activists managed to interrupt work at the construction site of a gigantic new coal-fired power plant in South Africa for several hours.
Some of the activists chained themselves to the gate at the entrance to the site where Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity utility, is busy building the Kusile power station, which will have a total capacity of 4800 megawatts (MW) once it’s completed. A second group of activists gained access to the site, scaled a tall construction crane and dropped a banner reading ‘Kusile: Climate Killer’ from it.....

No More School Buses in Washington State?
Washington state is considering eliminating all funding for school busing to address a $2 billion shortfall in the state budget. Cutting school busing for all students would give the state an additional $220 million. Getting rid of transportation for students would mean that it will be up to parents to figure out how to get their kids to school not to mention lots more traffic at drop-off and pick-up time.
But it also raises the question of what constitutes a “basic education.” While some note that cutting transportation is preferable to other cuts in the classroom, no more school buses means that some students will have no means of getting to school, if parents work or if students live beyond walking distance. While there are some benefits to students — such as the exercise from walking — there are also safety concerns, depending on where students live and how long their walk is.
Washington is not the only state that has put school buses on the line in seeking to address budget issues; California and Colorado have also previously cut funds for transportation. But if Washington Governor Chris Gregoire’s idea is approved by state lawmakers, Washington would be the first state to completely eliminate transportation for children in public school in the US. Bob Riley, executive director of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services, says that about 50 percent of US school children –not including children in special education whose transportation is mandated under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) — take school buses to.... more on

Michigan Republicans Allow Bullying If ‘Religiously or Morally Motivated’ (Video)
In Michigan, the State’s Republican-controlled Senate has passed an anti-bullying law named after a gay victim.
Good thing you might think. Except it’s not.
The Republicans put in a clause, introduced in secret, which is a cop out for anyone who can provide a religious or moral reason for their action.
Apparently to not grant this get-out clause is to act, as Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, puts it, as “a Trojan horse for the homosexual agenda.”
The Michigan bills are known as ‘Matt’s Safe School Law’ and are named for Matt Epling, an East Lansing gay teenager who committed suicide after being bullied......

Mercury Polluters May Be Allowed To Carry On Without Consequence
•by Heather Shelby
This is a guest post from Albert A Rizzo, MD. Dr. Rizzo is the National Volunteer Chair of the American Lung Association.
There is a lot being said in the news lately about how leaders in Washington are working to weaken or even repeal basic clean air protections. This week especially, the debate over regulating emissions from industrial boilers and cement plants has captured headlines across the nation.
Yet, what all this boiler and cement talk really means to everyday people hasn’t been made entirely clear. Bottom line, serious public health protections are on the line. Industrial boilers and cement plants are the second and third largest sources, respectively, of mercury and other toxic emissions and directly contribute to thousands of deaths each year.
Industrial boilers are most often used to produce electricity at chemical and manufacturing plants, paper mills and refineries. These boilers operate by burning oil, coal and other dirty substances, which create a toxic by-product of soot, mercury and other harmful agents that are released into our airways in alarming volumes. Breathing these air toxics can cause serious harm to the circulatory, respiratory, nervous, endocrine and other essential life systems. Pollution from industrial boilers is also a known cause of cancer, developmental disorders and premature death......

Yeah, because if you use a saucer mignon instead of being a king or a mash of water before dinner have been known effects on waist circumference (in the sense that they keep under control), it was discovered that eating at home rather than the restaurant helps to ease the burden on the balance, as well as diners choose the suitable effect for an effective cut calories ......

This time may have come really at the terminus of the mega-project Strait Bridge , chased and abandoned by the government on and off now for several years now. The dream to link Sicily to the mainland, in fact, has been hit hard in recent days, when he was voted a resolution of Italy of Values on local public transport.
I have given a comprehensive account is first Linchiesta is the website of ' Espresso . Linkiesta reconstructs the story thus: "To keep from going under to vote, the government has given a favorable opinion, the majority abstained and the Parliament approved the deletion of funding for the Bridge . " Recalling also "a letter signed by him and addressed by Berlusconi to Europe", which would not have mentioned the bridge between the projects to be supported.
The twists and turns, as always, can not be excluded completely. Also seen that, as mentioned, the politicians have changed their minds several times about this issue . The Espresso reconstructs the story in its own way, with an article that is not going to make so many turns of phrase: "Messina Bridge, 17 years of lies" . And so with a subtitle that comes right to the issue of constant changes of opinion: "The first time that the Knight was promised it to his taking the field in 1994. Eight years ago he swore that he would be open to traffic in 2011. Here all his statements: denied by the vote yesterday, which buries the project.".....

ROME (Reuters) - Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said today that the European debt crisis is a crisis the euro as its currency "did not convince anyone."
"There is an attack on the euro as a currency that did not convince anyone, because there is but one country but many do not have a unitary government or a bank reference and guarantees," said Berlusconi talking to Member General of Foreign Trade.
Already in recent days, the prime minister had come to express concern about the single currency. In a note at Palazzo Chigi, Monday, it said that the euro is the only currency that "has not backed by a lender of last resort structurally prepared to defend its credibility due to the aggressiveness of the financial markets." How Much Does It Cost To Insure a Nuclear Power Plant?
•by Andreas Spath
What are the potential financial consequences of a disastrous accident at a nuclear power plant? And how much would an insurance company charge to cover the risks involved in operating such a facility?
These are the questions the German Renewable Energy Federation asked Versicherungsforen Leipzig, an independent organization providing research services to the insurance industry, to answer. The results of the study, conducted by insurance management experts and actuarial mathematicians and commissioned before the Fukushima disaster in Japan, have recently been made available in English.
Asked to calculate an adequate risk-adjusted insurance premium to cover the damage resulting from a major “total meltdown” accident at a nuclear reactor, the researchers accounted for potential losses due to human fatalities and injuries, loss or damage to property and environmental damage.
They based their estimates on comprehensive research and a detailed review of the available literature and evaluated, among other things, the probability and extent of the damage and weather parameters. According to their report, “conservative assumptions were made to determine the amount of damage and the likelihood of its occurrence.”.... see on http://www.thivest.com/?page=1
