Over 4,000 people have been killed in the almost nine months of popular protests against the authoritarian regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Navi Pillay, the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, said that the death toll could actually be even higher, based on “the reliable information coming to us is.” She also said that Syria can now be considered to be in a state of civil war.
On Monday, the UN had issued a report accusing Syria of crimes against humanity. 256 children have been killed since the uprising began in mid-March in the southern city of Daraa.
More Sanctions For Syria
Britain, the European Union and Arab nations including Turkey have all sharply increased pressure on Syria, with Britain accusing Iran of assisting Syria in the crackdown on its citizens. Addressing EU ministers in Brussels, British foreign secretary William Hague said that “There is a link between what is happening in Syria and what is happening in Iran.” One senior Arab diplomat even said that there are 300-400 Iranian revolutionary guard personnel in Syria; both Aran and Western governments have been saying that Iran has been giving Syria financial and logistical assistance, as well as security advice..... more

Norway Killer Found Insane, Unfit for Prison
OSLO, Norway (AP) — Confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik belongs in psychiatric care instead of prison, prosecutors in Norway said Tuesday after a mental evaluation declared him legally insane during a bomb-and-shooting rampage that killed 77 people.
The court-ordered assessment found that the self-styled anti-Muslim militant was psychotic during the July 22 attacks, which would make him mentally unfit to be convicted and imprisoned for the country’s worst peacetime massacre.
The report, written by two psychiatrists who spent a total of 36 hours talking to Breivik, will be reviewed by a forensic panel before the Oslo district court makes a ruling on his mental state.
Their conclusions surprised many outside experts and contrasted with earlier comments by the head of the review panel, who told The Associated Press in late July that it was unlikely that Breivik would be declared insane because the attacks were so carefully planned and executed.
But prosecutors insisted the psychiatric report describes a man living in a “delusional universe” — a paranoid schizophrenic who’s lost touch with reality..... more on

Migrants in Egypt Targeted For Body Parts
People fleeing persecution in countries like Eritrea are being killed in Egypt for their body parts.
According to a doctor in a town on the Sudan-Egypt border quoted by South Africa’s Weekend Argus newspaper, a number of “disemboweled bodies” have been discovered. Organs, especially kidneys, were missing.
A recent car crash in Sinai provided evidence. The doctor who was driving the car was killed and, inside the vehicle, officials discovered a small refrigerator containing several human organs. There is other evidence including photographs from a morgue in the Egyptian port town of al-Arish showing scars in the abdomens of refugees who did not make it.
At least 27 refugees have alleged that Egyptian Bedouin people-smugglers have threatened to steal their organs unless they or their families paid money, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) Israel says.
The Egyptian authorities are known for ignoring the treatment of migrants by traffickers and others, or, in the case of those trying for the Israeli border, actually shooting to kill. They deny the evidence of any trade in body parts...... more
